Natural Coconut Oil: Apply or Eat? These are the benefits

Yes, I know what you're thinking... spread or eat? How so? Well, we sell it as a cosmetic product, but the coconut oil we sell is also used often enough in Surinamese kitchens. There is even a variant where only salt has been added for the extra taste of the coconut oil. And eating coconut oil is also said to have health benefits, for example it would help with fat burning.

In this blog article we will list the benefits of natural coconut oil for both internal and external use. But first...what is coconut oil and where does it come from?

What is coconut oil?

It sounds very obvious, but natural coconut oil is an oil that is made from the pulp of a coconut that grows on the coconut palm (part of the palm tree family). This flesh is white in color and quite hard in structure when the coconut is fully grown. There is also a difference in the production of coconut oil. There is a cold-pressed version and a heated version.

Cold pressed and heated Coconut Oil

Cold-pressed coconut oil
With the cold-pressed version of coconut oil, the oil is pressed from the pulp of the coconut oil without heating it or adding chemicals. The pulp of the coconut oil is first grated, so that it is easier to squeeze. The juice squeezed from the grated coconut is also called coconut milk (not to be confused with coconut water which is in the middle of the coconut).

The oil and the rest of the coconut milk are separated by a simple method, gravity. Oil is the lightest part of the coconut milk and therefore floats at the top. This separation process becomes visible after about six hours.

Heated coconut oil
The process of making the heated version of coconut oil is the same as that of the cold-pressed version. Namely the grating.
After grating, the grated pulp is heated, which turns the pulp into a warm liquid. The water in the grated flesh (again, not to be mistaken with the coconut water in the… that's right!), evaporates and all that remains is the oil. Depending on how long the oil is heated, it becomes a white to brown solidified substance when cooled.

Unrefined vs refined coconut oil

We talk about Unrefined coconut oil or Virgin coconut oil when fresh coconuts/flesh are used in the production of the coconut oil. This coconut oil also has the most nutritional value for both external and internal use. Unrefined can be either cold-pressed or heated.

We talk about a refined coconut oil when dried fruit pulp is used to produce the coconut oil, which is also called copra. These are often cheaper variants of coconut oil and have fewer nutritional values than its unrefined variant.

In the remainder of this blog article, only the unrefined version of coconut oil will be discussed.
