Itchy scalp? These are the causes and what you can do about them

Everyone has experienced it: scratching an itch and then your shoulders are covered in white flakes or dandruff. Why this happens and what you can do about it is explained in this blog article.

An itchy scalp

An itchy scalp is also an irritated scalp – it is irritation of the skin, causing it to itch. For example, if you have a healthy scalp, the cells in your skin renew themselves approximately every 28 days, just like the rest of your skin. With an irritated scalp, cell renewal occurs much faster, which means that in addition to itching, you can also suffer from flakes and dandruff. These are skin cells that are produced and immediately shed by the scalp.

The causes of an itchy scalp vary. In this blog article we will discuss the most common causes, which products you can use against them and what you can adjust in your daily lifestyle.

What are the causes of an itchy scalp?

There are several causes for itching on your scalp:
- Imbalance in sebum production
- (seborrheic) eczema
- psoriasis
- dry skin
- hair products

Imbalance in sebum production

The first cause is sebum production that is out of balance, causing irritation. This is often accompanied by an oily scalp. A greasy scalp is caused by the overproduction of sebum (a body's own fat).

There are several factors why you may (temporarily) have an overproduction of sebum.

These factors include: stress, unbalanced diet, hormonal disorder, medication or environmental factors.
The most common complaint with an oily scalp is itching (often accompanied by flakes). Scratching creates friction on the scalp, which causes more sebum to be produced.

The solution to this is that the scalp should become "calm" again as quickly as possible. Tonka oil helps with this. The Tonka oil allows the scalp to breathe again because it is one of the few oils to open the pores and thus restart blood circulation.

"The combination of the tonka oil and the moisturizer is very nice for my hair. I have only used it for a week and have already noticed a reduction in my dandruff."

Itchy scalp due to seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp is common, this form of itching and flaking is better known as 'dandruff'. Dandruff is caused by a combination of an oily scalp and the development of fungi/yeasts. This form of eczema is an inflammation of the scalp caused by yeast, where you see yellow or white flakes in the hair, which often end up on the shoulders. .

For (scalp) skin conditions such as fungi and inflammation, we always recommend our SheaCare Skin Elixir .

This product has anti-inflammatory properties and fights skin fungi. In another blog article we will discuss the effects of the SheaCare Skin Elixir in more detail.

Itchy scalp due to psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition that can occur not only on the scalp, but on the entire body.

With psoriasis, your scalp can be very itchy and the white, thick flakes become stuck to the scalp.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that unfortunately cannot yet be completely cured. The only thing you can do is suppress the psoriasis as much as possible. SheaCare Skin Elixir and African Blacksoap are suitable products for this.

A dry scalp

A dry scalp leads to itching. During the winter months, when the air is cold and dry, many more people suffer from itching and dryness on the (scalp) skin. Frequent washing can dry out the scalp and therefore lead to an itchy scalp.

Dry scalp is common with climate changes. The indoor and outdoor temperature changes during the winter months cause an imbalance on the scalp. This can cause the scalp to dry out, causing itching and flakes.

It is not recommended to wash your hair more often. Because washing your hair frequently can also cause the scalp to dry out, which in turn leads to an itchy scalp. We recommend that you take good care of your scalp, especially during the winter months, by regularly applying Tonka oil and Tonka moisturizer. Here too, both products bring the scalp back into balance, causing the scalp to relax. This results in no more flakes, and therefore no itching.

Itchy scalp due to hair products

Yes indeed. Hair products are often the culprit of an itchy scalp. Think of heavily perfumed hair products such as hair grease, gel, wax and leave-in conditioners. When (excessive) use of hair products can cause you to suffer from an itchy scalp more quickly and regularly. Hair products accumulate on the scalp, causing irritation. It is therefore advisable to wash your hair regularly with a natural or mild shampoo and/or make a hair mask from Ghassoul clay . Ghassoul clay is of natural origin, has a deep cleansing effect, is not perfumed and thoroughly cleans the hair and scalp.

There are other things to look out for if you have an itchy scalp

In addition to the various 100% natural products you can use to combat an itchy scalp, there are a number of other things you can do to prevent this:

- Try not to wash your hair too often. Were you? Always use a natural or mild shampoo.

- Do not blow dry your hair on the warm setting

- Go for a healthy and balanced diet

- Provide relaxation to reduce stress

- Massage the scalp regularly to promote blood circulation

- Do not tie your hair too tightly in a ponytail, so that your hair can continue to breathe sufficiently

- Protect your hair from the sun with a cap, hat or headscarf
