You've probably heard of this before. But why is shea butter specifically so good for baby skin? We will investigate this in this blog.

Shea butter, the ingredients

Vitamin-A

Retinol or vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. It can be made in the body from beta-carotene, which is why it is also called pro-vitamin A.

What is vitamin A good for?

Vitamin A plays an important role in the body.

  • It is good for vision, vitamin A allows your eyes to adapt to dim light
  • It contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system
  • Does it play a role in the development of the unborn child and the growth of children
  • It is involved in the production of skin cells and cells in your trachea, hair, gums and lung tissue
  • It helps keep the skin healthy

Vitamin A deficiency

A deficiency of vitamin A can cause skin problems, dull hair, night blindness and even blindness.

Vitamin-E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. This means that it is able to combat free radicals. Free radicals are byproducts in our body. They are radicals that lack an electron and are therefore unstable.

What is Vitamin E good for?

Vitamin E is also known as tocopherol and it is the most abundant vitamin in the skin. This is because vitamin E counteracts free radicals, which in turn can cause all kinds of harmful effects in the body. Vitamin E is mainly found in the sebum of the upper layer of the skin. This vitamin is also an important barrier against the sun's harmful UV rays.

Vitamin F

Vitamin F is not a real vitamin but, according to skincare expert Danne Montague King, it is a term for two essential fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid. "Vitamin F" moisturizes the skin, has an anti-inflammatory function and restores the skin barrier.

Fatty acids

Shea butter has four important fatty acids, namely: stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and arachidic acid. The fatty acid of Shea butter consists mainly of stearic acid and oleic acid.

Baby skin, what does it need in the first year?

The skin is our largest organ. It is therefore a must to handle it well from an early age, because it should last for a long time. The great thing is that normal baby skin generally doesn't need much at all. Baby skin contains a lot of collagen and produces many body fats, which ensures elasticity in the skin.

However, baby skin can use some extra from time to time. It also happens that the skin is chapped or dry in some places. Although this is often harmless, it can cause flakes and/or itching.

What can Shea butter contribute to baby's skin?

Shea butter is a rich butter that is full of fatty acids and vitamins. These fatty acids and vitamins protect baby's skin and keep it healthy. The vitamins A and E that shea butter is full of help the skin's collagen production (so it can also be used for adult skin). The use of Shea butter or products containing shea butter, such as our baby lotion , provide a protective barrier for the baby's skin. Besides making the baby's skin very soft, it also has an anti-fungal effect!

Fun fact: Did you know that the Shea tree is considered sacred because of its benefits for the skin, hair, beauty and health? Shea butter is also said to be the secret of the legendary beauty and Egyptian queen Nefertiti.
